No matter what genre of music one listens to, everyone will tout their era of music as the best. With such in mind, it’s unsurprising this is the ongoing debate in the world of hip hop.
Some love lyrics, whereas Dr. Dre had millions in love with beats. Today’s ‘mumble rap’ and lyrical liars is a sad day to some in hip hop.
Much like the mythical creature the Phoenix, Godbody Ginnerus is rising out of southern Arizona, in pursuit to restore the faith and belief in what some argue is real hip hop.
I had an opportunity to sit down with the rapper after he performed in Tempe, Arizona, where I quickly learned the difference between confidence and cocky – but in order to be successful, you need a little of both. The term 9:39 was in question, as it’s a part of his brand as well, as “what is your overall vibe”.
[G.G.]: “This is a 9:39 type of vibe. Which is a vibe of love and unity. Which is what brought us all together to stand on this ‘Bihness’ that we stand on. Which is to Elevate, Evolve, Enlighten, Empower, and Enjoy doing it.”
I followed up asking about his delivery and how his style can be coined as a J. Cole flair, while others compare it to Kendrick, highlighting his age in his craft while still being young in the game.
[G.G.]: “Considering the fact that we have yet to release a project or single [up until recently] it feels appropriate.”
Appropriate? That’s an interesting answer.
[B.D. News]: “Do you feel that way because of the work you’ve done or because you have seen the results of the work you’ve done?”
[G.G.]: “Both; not only is it because of the work we’ve done, as well as the results, but also because we’ve seen and felt the impact of the work that we’re about to do. Although we’re grateful to be mentioned amongst greats, that’s nothing to be proud of. Our mission and message [are] far greater than barbershop comparison. This is much more than that. Our continuous growth and evolution prove that there is nobody out there standing on this type of ‘Bihness’ and/or talking spicy. You don’t have to take my word for it, because 1/11/24 at 9:39, you’ll get a taste of it. When you do, let this be a reminder that we’re just getting warmed up. So stay present.”
The reference to January 11th, as well as the periodic reference to “Bihness”, pertains to the first official release from the artist, 9:39’n On Ginneru Bihness: Warming Up with Gratitude, which was released on the aforementioned date on Spotify and other respective digital music platforms.
In the days that led up to the album’s release, 9:39 merchandise was already being worn all over the Phoenix valley. I was blessed with an outfit for my son and hats for my wife and self, and I can truly say real hip hop has a chance at revival.
At the end of the interview, Godbody Ginnerus extended an invite to join along for the ride for all who see themselves as “chosen ones out there who desire to be in alignment with something far bigger than themselves.”
Godbody Ginnerus’ music is also available on iTunes and can be followed on Instagram and TikTok.
