On August 9th, news broke that a “Utah man” was shot and killed during an FBI raid. The deceased suspect was Craig Robertson. The FBI confirmed that the raid was related to an investigation into threats against President Joe Biden and others. The shooting occurred at 6:15 AM in Provo, Utah while the agents were “attempting to serve a warrant,” the FBI said. Initial media reports make it sound as if there was a shootout, but the FBI has not made that claim. We still do not know if Robertson was armed when he died or if he brandished a gun or shot at agents.
What little video has come out was recorded by neighbors. It shows the moments before and after the raid. We see a large SWAT presence at the house, and we hear immediate and loud shouting from agents who appear hostile. We hear more shouting then what appears to be a large FLASHBANG being shot into the house. You can watch the video here.
We do know that “anonymous law enforcement sources” have told multiple mainstream publications, including the Associated Press and Fox News, that Robertson was “armed” at the time he was shot:
“A law enforcement source told Fox News Digital that Robertson was holding a weapon.” – Fox News
“The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously,” the statement read. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under review by the FBI’s Inspection Division. Robertson was armed at the time, according to two law enforcement sources who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.” – NY Post
I have yet to see video evidence that Robertson was holding a gun at the time he was killed. There have been a lot of people saying that he “didn’t comply” and insinuating that he therefore “deserved to die.” We need to see the full context of what happened before we can determine whether he was attempting to comply. Many people are assuming he engaged in a shootout with the FBI, but not even the FBI has made that claim. They have been very careful to say only that he was “armed” at the time the shooting occurred.
Now I want to talk about the actual criminal complaint against Robertson.
You can read all 39 pages in full here. I wrote an entire thread breaking down all the issues I see with the complaint, namely that most of the posts referenced are from almost a year ago. Were these posts cringe? Yes. Did Roberston fedpost? Yes. Do some of these posts appear disturbing? Yes. From my review of his Facebook page (archived here) he seems to be leaning heavily into an online tough-guy persona. Like many boomer men of his generation, he had a love of firearms and seems to have been involved in that kind of milieu. But if you go back years on his page, you can see him making the same type of over-the-top violent-sounding rants.
This appears to be simply how the guy talks. Now to be clear, some of the posts can be construed as “threatening” but any FBI agent who was worth their salt could have quickly ascertained from monitoring Robertson that he posed no real threat.
I spoke to his neighbor who described the situation as follows:
“Craig Robertson was an elderly man who lived in our neighborhood and went to our local church. He was almost 80 years old, 300 pounds, very frail, and had trouble walking except with a cane or walker. He was the financial clerk for our church when I worked there. He was a good guy. He loved woodworking and collecting guns. He was apparently very outspoken online, but I didn’t know that until today. Bottom line, anyone who knew him would never consider him a threat. He drove the half block to church because he couldn’t walk it. He has a disabled son, who is adult, blind, that he was caring for.”
This description is of course at odds with the FBI’s breathless portrayal of him as an armed and dangerous extremist. We know the FBI conducted physical surveillance of Robertson, as they outline in almost comedic newspeak, spending five paragraphs to explain a simple drive to church and back home while he wears an apparently very scary AR-15 Lapel Pin.
Let's start with the breathless five paragraphs of drivel written like they are on some dangerous stake out. They are literally watching an elderly man who is obese and needs a cane to walk get in his car and drive to church. He then gives someone a ride home and goes home. They… pic.twitter.com/sX7qRrz7sj

They would have been able to observe his frail condition the first time they approached him earlier this year when he told them not to come back without a warrant.
Looking at the “threats” Robertson made, they mostly seem foolish and in bad taste.
Now let's look at some of his posts and the FBI's commentary. This post, like most in the complaint is from a year ago almost. While this is a foolish thing to post, it doesn't seem to be a real threat. pic.twitter.com/e7wskPAXOU

They show posts he made with hyperbolic names he gave his firearms.
This Facebook post was in poor taste but it's from October of 2022. If the FBI agent actually believes this picture is intended to "cause death to Democrats," I would ask why then did Mr. Robinson not ever actually kill any Democrats? Could it be that perhaps this post was… pic.twitter.com/wc7kLSkHi3

If these posts are real “threats” and they are from almost a year ago and he never tried to “act on them,” then why would that all of a sudden change? You can scroll back to 2012 on his Facebook and he is saying similar things.
In continuing with their stupidity, the FBI cites another nearly year old Facebook post of a gun which they claim this somehow means this elderly man "intends to bring death to members of the Democrat party." Again – how are they inferring this? It could be a joke. They just… pic.twitter.com/Um2BJi37Xk

The FBI believes this Facebook post by an elderly disabled man is "a threat of violence against Joe Biden." It seems to be first amendment protected speech to me. Also note the now black color of the Facebook screen shots. They were white earlier in the complaint. Did the FBI… pic.twitter.com/lA3Hb5sFm9

The FBI went back 15 years to posts he made in 2009 to suggest he is somehow capable of using the ghillie suit and sniper rifle he posed with back then and that he was planning on executing an attempt to kill Joe Biden.
It is absurd and outrageous. Even if these posts warranted a law enforcement response, they did not have to conduct a pre-dawn SWAT raid on the home. They knew he was old, overweight, and frail. They could have easily arrested him while he was walking to the mailbox.
It appears that cowardly agents who were mad that he shit-posted about them and taunted them online decided to conduct the tactical raid as an execution.
I will leave you with the words of another one of Mr. Robertson’s neighbors:
On the FBI killing of my friend, Craig Robertson –
Craig was a member of my local Church congregation. I've known him for the past 3 years, give or take. Craig would always sit on the pew next to the chapel door. He was a regular face in the congregation. My wife and I loved… pic.twitter.com/gp75TXgBxq— All is Not Well in Zion (@NotWellInZion) August 10, 2023
